Interviewed by Richard Cox
Kevin L is a brand new artist on the BK Music label. His debut CD will be released this year. God has given Kevin a vision to bring change to our nation through peace and brotherly love that he expresses through his music ministry. With his highly anticipated project, he is on a mission to reach our youth in a radical and life‑changing way.
GospelCity: Kevin, how did you getting involved in the gospel music industry?
Kevin L: I’ve been involved in the music business for some time. Actually my sister’s father is Ray Charles; Ray is my stepfather. We have the same mother and different fathers. My sister, Sheila Raye Charles and I were always together. So that kinda started out my music career singing with her. I just had a love and great appreciation for music. But through certain trials and tribulations in my life, I really began to understand the importance of praising God and getting through situations pleasing God. When I realized how God had lifted me through situations…I felt when I wanted to come with any music again that I wanted to express somehow to the world… what God had done for me through praising Him. I heard the term R&P - that stands for rhythms and praise and I said, “Oh!! that’s me!” So we jumped off into working on the album. The first song came off with You Got Somebody Watching Over You ... Just you Wait & See.
GC: Tell us more about your debut gospel music project.
KL: The title of the album is Souled Out … soon to be released later this year. We’re doing an awareness campaign right now. We’ll be letting it out to radio soon for everybody to really get a taste of the project. You know that music is one thing but the concept we have for the project is called H13 project along with a clothing line called Stranger Gear. H13 stands for Hebrews 13: 1, 2 which says in the Bible that “let brotherly love continue and do not forget to entertain strangers for thereby some have entertained angels unaware.” So you never know who we are talking to. Let our first approach be that of love so the emphasis on the project is on brotherly love. We are sending a different message. We just believe society is so inundated with violence that affects our kids and is making it look hot. We know that this is played out… it has run its course and now the new hotness is peace and brotherly love. Guys are ready to build something. You know elements are coming against us so great … and all these types of things. This is the season to start trying to build. It doesn’t matter what religion; if it is saying that love is the key principle and fundamentals of life.
