We caught up with the excitable holy hip hop artist K-Drama before the Holy Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta to ask him a few questions about his music ministry. Gospelcity.com: Can you talk a bit about your new album? K-Drama: I just came out with a new album not too long, called Behind The Glory. It came out in September of ’06, which in the gospel market, it’s still relatively new…so just been pushing that, it’s been doing well. It came out through Holy Hip Hop Music and distributed by EMI Gospel. GC: What has the experience been like for you? K-D: It’s been good ‘cause I’m on shelves now in stores…Christian rap doesn’t come out as frequently so when people see my CD, they’re like, “Oh, it’s only $9.99, it’s a new Christian rap CD, they ‘ain’t nothing else out, so might as well buy it.” So, I got a lot of new fans just from people seeing my CD on the shelves…so it’s been a great experience. GC: What would you say is your ministry? What did you feel on your heart that you wanted people to see? K-D: I wanted people to see that anything you work for doesn’t come easy…you know, a lot of people see the glory, but they don’t know the story behind the glory. They don’t know what I went through in order to get to this place of ministry. So I encourage the listener … whatever you’re doing in life, it’s not gonna come easy, you’re gonna have to put work into it to see a manifestation that glorifies God. GC: Can you share with us how you came to be a holy hip hop artist? K-D: What happened was I was raised in church. My mom was an active believer in the house of faith but… like most teens, I just went to church because I was made to go…but throughout the week, I was at school doing a whole different thing. One day, my friend Marquez Patterson died at the age of 14 of heart failure! And you know, you don’t hear of teenagers dying that early from that cause. And so, I was like, I always knew I would one day become born-again, but I always pushed it off, I was like, ‘When I turn 40, I’ll get saved…you know after I settle down and I done all my partying and all that stuff, then I’ll get saved and give my life to God.’ But God was like, “You may not have tomorrow to give to me…so you need to live life for me, because I created you for my purpose.” You know, all things are created for Him and by Him…so I realized that so I got saved at his funeral November 22, 1998…God inspired me to do Christian rap through another individual. It’s the strangest thing…I never rapped a day in my life… I saw this individual rap and it just encouraged me to pick up a pen…I just felt like writing and so I did. I recorded a song and I Iet other people hear it and they were like, “Hey, I really like it…all jokes aside, not just because we’re friends, but I really like it.” And the encouragement they gave me kept pushing me to make more songs until I had enough material to come out with an album. And it just kept going from there. I took it to a new level…Now I’m here with holy hip hop. GC: So, what are you expecting for tonight? K-D: Oh, man! I’m getting an award tonight. I’m just excited to get that trophy and you know it’s not about the accolade... But it’s good to get an accolade, you know…you know, because we’ve suffered a lot with churches kicking us out of their temples and stuff and saying hip hop is of the devil and so it’s nice to come together and get re-energized and re-focused on our ministries…it’s nice it happens at the beginning of the year. K-Drama received an honorary award from Holy Hip Hop and appeared in concert the following night with holy hip hop artist D Maub.
