Author: Ted Haggard

Anyone with a heart for urban ministry should purchase a copy of Ted Haggard’s Taking it to the Streets (Regal Books). It is a resourceful and practical guide for people looking for a creative way to serve their communities for Jesus.

A gem (there are many) of Haggard’s book is that it emphasizes that prayerwalking is a matter of stewardship over God’s resources of land use, people, and the environment. Most Christians think to pray and protest when it’s too late—the adult bookstore moves into the strip mall or gangs invade the schools or teen parenthood explodes. Haggard urges God’s people to lay hold of and literally walk in the promise, “I'm giving you every square inch of the land you set your foot on - just as I promised Moses.” (Joshua 1:3)

The author writes, “Therefore, I think we ought to pray the Word over the people of our cities, whether they are believers or not (a touch of heaven around them is better than no heaven at all). We have the authority, and thus the responsibility, to stand as intercessors for the people of our cities.”

Taking it to the Streets is a quick book to read but it contains incredibly inspiring words. Haggard testifies to the power prayerwalking has had in strengthening his faith and his commitment to build God’s kingdom on Earth. And I think few would argue that prayerwalking is a great form of exercise for both the spirit and the body.

Haggard is the senior pastor of New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He currently serves as president of the National Association of Evangelicals and is senior editorial adviser for the magazine, Ministries Today.
