As a non-mother I’m always at a loss for baby shower gifts. It’s beyond my experience and skill to spend hours scouring for receiving blankets and onesies. But I know books and believe I’ve found the perfect gift for mothers-to-be: Spiritual Guide for the Pregnant Woman (Pleasant Word) by Phyllis Beech and Linda Dougan.

Spiritual Guide is an absolutely delightful book filled with scriptural, meditative exercises for pregnant women. Each chapter offers contemplative information beneficial to the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of both the mother and her baby.

Beech and Dougan, to their credit, encourage and soothe a mother-to-be’s uncertainties by making prayer an integral part of the pregnancy. They posit prayer as more important than and every bit as necessary as proper nutrition and self-care.

Spiritual Guide also invites mothers-to-be to journal and record their thoughts and feelings in each section. The end bonus being a priceless gift to present to children down the road.

The language of Spiritual Guide does not placate or assume the spiritual maturity of its readers. Instead, it presents its facts thoughtfully and suggestively without being preachy. First time as well as experienced mothers-to-be will find the guide useful.

Phyllis Beech is a film developer, producer and writer whose work (The Courage to Love) aired on the Lifetime cable network. And Linda Dougan is a psychologist.
