God Be Gone?

R. Lewis Stephens"Why do the nations rage, and the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, ‘Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us ’He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision." Psalm 2:1-4

A look at current events could lead you to believe that the world is in total chaos and no one is in charge; the war against terrorism, Enron, the Supreme Court strikes down a Texas sodomy law, sexual misconduct in the Catholic Church, the ordaining of a homosexual bishop. I could cite numerous examples.

The world’s system wants God out. Little man, full of pride, believes he is the end all of knowledge; that he has all the answers to life and no longer needs God. There is an open and brazen denial of Christ today. Society has, in effect, told God, “We don’t need you anymore. Be gone!”

To the casual observer, it seems as if all of mankind is shaking its collective fist in God’s face and daring Him to act; to “come on out and fight”. Like the psalmist said, the world has set itself against the “LORD and His Anointed”. It has rejected Jesus Christ. Even in the so-called gospel churches today Christ is little more than a symbol.

Take a look at what’s happening over in Europe today. Once a fortress of Christianity, it is now a secular society. Europe has all but turned its back, and a deaf ear, on the God of the universe. Why? The church there no longer has an influence over the culture. This should serve as a wake-up call to the church in America.

As children of God, we can feel hopeless and defeated about the world’s situation. But God is sitting, waiting patiently and without concern. He is the beginning and the end (Revelations 21:6). He holds the stars in His hands. He looks down and laughs. “He who sits in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall hold them in derision.” (Psalm 2:4).

God is moving forward according to His purpose. Whatever man does down here won’t deter Him, detour Him or defer Him - at all. God did not see something on the cable news channel He didn’t already know about. There is nothing that has surprised Him at all. This world may think it’s so smart and that it doesn’t need God. But God is surely letting us know He is still on His throne.
