Musician or minstrel? Many folks can play notes, or bang pots and pans just like Shelton Wilson did as a preschooler. Yet there are chosen ones whose musicianship generates a true passion for the Lord ( 2 Kings 3:15 ).

Wilson 's solo recording debut, It's Me, Vol. 1 from Chill Wil Music, drops seamless grooves, doses of floetry and downright comedy. Since the early 80s, he has frequently been in demand as an accompanist, choir teacher/director and sound guru.

Starting with drums, Wilson added keyboards to the repertoire, which would become his central focus. Denomination never stood in the way of Wilson's ministry. Besides a membership in the Gospel Music Workshop of America, he serves as music director for Clarence Powell & Divine Praise , and has also backed Beverly Crawford , Thomas Whitfield , Ted & Sheri , plus many other ensembles. The Boston-bred Wilson developed an endearing respect for his music teachers, including Dennis Montgomery III , a mentor, close friend and producer of It's Me Vol. 1 . Yet even with a fulfilling career and support, he retreated to the West Coast dodging hurt inflicted by fellow musicians. He eventually found his way back home, both spiritually and literally, including a church music ministry in his home state.

A mellow and funky ride, Give It Up showers about all the reasons to acknowledge His presence, such as "This is the day that the Lord has made." ( Psalm 118:24 ). Sure, this verse is often quoted but each day launches another new start, which is worth the rejoicing. Lori Mayes-Harper's bell-like soprano takes the lead role.

Happiness can sometimes be a deceptive thing. Yet when we're lost in emotion, Key To Happiness examines the "lifeline" of Christ's love. Lead vocalist Montgomery III supplies floating in heaven harmonies.

Church Folks come in many sizes, shapes and colors. In this comic oratorio, Wilson targets everyone for the hot seat: ushers, the choir, and, oh oh, ministers. A droll disco drum machine sets the appropriate tone.
