Kirk Franklin - Hero
J. Moss and Tye Tribbett help out on the exciting, horn-jammed track, Could’ve Been. Better is another strong danceable track which centers around the fact that no matter what’s happening now, “it’s gonna get better”. Co-written by Franklin, this track is perfect for the gospel workout tape.
Gospel’s reigning diva, Yolanda Adams, makes a guest appearance as well on the stunning Afterwhile. A song, focusing on holding on until God comes through, is one of Adams’ finest performances – with just her impressive vocals and a piano. Pastor Marvin Winans lends his memorable voice to the church-laden, organ-flavored Brokenhearted. Keep Your Head, a remake of Earth Wind & Fire’s classic, is redone with the familiar and spiritual Kirk Franklin influence. Backed by a superb group of singers throughout the CD, this cut is a fun, uplifting tune.
One of R&B’s most prolific and celebrated artists, Stevie Wonder, contributes on the bouncy track Why. Borrowing from another 80s icon, Deniece Williams, Franklin includes a few bars of Williams’ familiar tune, Freeon Why. Filled with references to today’s recent events, the track is sobering.
Sitting in the producer’s chair on this one, Franklin delivers a powerful and dynamic debut on Hero, the first project out the gate from his brand new Fo Yo Soul Entertainment.
