V3
By Rene Williams
Whether it’s in gospel or secular music, there’s just something about a family singing together. Groups like The Jacksons, The Hawkins and The Winans attest to the fact that the musical gene certainly does run in families. V3, a brand new gospel group, has recently surfaced and they’ve definitely got music in their blood.
V3, EMI Gospel’s sister trio, has just dropped their brand new self-titled offering. Made up of sisters Latoya, Shelley and Sacha Vinson, they’ve honed their craft along with the help of their parents, a father who is a pastor and a mother who was a professional singer, songwriter and recording artist. The home training did them well as evidenced on their urban-filled, contemporary gospel debut. Influenced by artists like Andrae Crouch and Commissioned, they’ve delivered a 10-track assortment of inspirational cuts. Opening with a slamming track, Let Go, the song is Destiny Child-like song with pure funk, accentuated by an awesome bass line. Let Go’s lyrics find the girls talking about letting go and letting God.
The smooth, harmonic background vocals of Take The Time and Love Makes The World Beautiful makes both of these relaxing, yet inspiring cuts. I Need You, a pretty, melodic tune finds the women singing to Lord over a sweet tinkling of the ivories followed by musical swelling of multiple instruments. Penned by noted songwriter and artist Antonio Neal and up-and-coming recording artist Ayeisha Woods, the ballad is a vulnerable and reflective song.
Producers Doubledutch, comprised of Josiah Bell and Robert Marvin, step in on R&B-flavored songs like Take Me There and Have You Ever? Close To You, with its strong, modern vibe yet pop-friendly feel and syncopated handclaps, showcases the sugary soprano vocals of the Vinson sisters. Debbie Winans tries her hand at co-writing on a number of the albums’ cuts such as Let’s Take It, a declaration to take back what the enemy has stolen.
The threesome closes their memorable debut with an appropriate song of gratitude, Thank You, another mellow and thoughtful track. Although the trio definitely provides some good up-tempo tracks, they seem to really shine on the more serene and tranquil songs that could almost be termed “Christian Quiet Storm”. V3 is certainly a group to watch out for.
