Alvin Slaughter - Overcomer
The bulk of the CD, though, hovers in a reverent mood. The highlights begin with an effective song sequencing in two sections. First Lindsey’s original work, I Receive Your Love for Me that brilliantly sets up the testimonial Power In The Name Of Jesus. The same occurs with Miriam Webster (Hillsong Worship) on the track Loving Kindness, which opens the path onto the simple yet glorious hymn, He Is Lord. Slaughter, sans choir, belts his affections: He is risen from the dead and He is Lord. Taking a break from the urban flavor, the pop ballad, Tell Me Again (Lest I Forget) , recalls the biblical stories of David & Abraham. Slaughter sings, “I need to remember the story…Of how we fit into His plan, of how He makes our failure His glory.” Finally, Hallelujah, composed by Anointed’s Steve Crawford, emits elongated African inflections from the choir and Slaughter’s strong worship leading presence, backed by ambient synthesized strings.
Another big strength on Overcomer is how Slaughter piques the attention of worshippers with mini-sermons and his serious connections with God through the music. The prime examples are on the disc’s first half, but the ending prayer on the reprise of I Received Your Love seals this premise. Even when the mood gets stuck in a rut on a couple of tracks, Slaughter reenergizes the proceedings in a hurry. It’s a difficult task indeed to maintain a praise and worship mood for the most part, but Overcomer is an exception.
