Spensha Baker - “Outloud”
By Rhonda Ridley
Spensha Baker is a powerhouse! It has been a minute since we've seen or heard such tremendous vocals from a young woman. I rank her up there with young phenoms like, Stephanie Mills, Stacey Lattisaw, Shanice, Whitney Houston just to name a few. Yes, I know I just aged myself, but who cares, this young lady is off the hook!
Spensha is soon to release her debut album, “Outloud”, on Geffen Records, a secular label that houses names like Mary J. Blige, Keisha Cole, Common, Floetry, Nelly Furtado. She is fast proving to be a wise choice for the label, as their breakout Gospel artist, and quite the label mate for the aforementioned. So far she's poised to set records in both the secular and Christian markets.
In no way does she sound her age. There is a maturity to her voice that places her in the same category as many of your gospel favorites. What's really pleasant about her is when you hear her speak, she truly is just a 15 year old girl who has been given a gift by God and living the dream many of us only dream of. She is living “her” dream. She is a living dream.
The title track on the album, “Outloud”, has such a youthful sound and you instantly enjoy it, but the meaning behind Outloud really relates to you no matter who you are or where you are in life. Simply, Spensha's imploring listeners to not waste time, not to be afraid to live life and never be afraid to fail. Merely, get up the next day and start over again.
She has even dared to release as her debut single, a “ Clark Sisters” remake, “Hallelujah”. Now all of you out there who know anything about “ Clark Sisters“ , know that they can sang. And so can Spensha! The song proved a challenge even to her strong vocals, but the final product is an awesome song.
With a noted foundation in traditional Gospel, Spensha knew that her debut single had to speak to her audience - the youth. So, she called on super producer Warryn Campbell ( Kanye West, Jamie Foxx , Mary Mary ), produce “Hallelujah” .
Other choice producers adding to the sheer hotness of this album are: award winning producers Shep Crawford ( Whitney Houston , Heather Headley ), and Eric Dawkins ( Fantasia , BeBe Winans ) of Dawkins and Dawkins fame to name a few.
