Smokie Norful - LIVE
By Em Fergusson
Fans have been waiting for this moment for years. Smokie Norful, has finally released a live album.“Smokie Norful Live,” is a lively musical project filled with contagious hits. The album was recorded live in Memphis, Tennessee, where the multiple award-winning artist spent time as a child. “I have all kinds of connectivity to Memphis – it’s been like a second home to me,” says Norful, who born in Arkansas. “When I was a little boy, my mother and father would take us over to Memphis, and my great-uncle and aunt, who live there, would take us to the mall do to Christmas and school shopping.” Smokie’s wife is also from Memphis.
The album was recorded live before an excited audience. More than 2, 000 people attended the live taping, held at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts in Memphis. Many of the collaborators on this project – from musicians to some of the worshippers at the live taping - attend Victory Cathedral Worship Center with Norful, the church he founded. The warmth and sincerity of the project shines through on every track, from the worshipful ballad, ‘In The Presence of the King,’ to the jazzy tunes of ‘Don’t Quit’. Both songs talk about the importance of worship and living for God sincerely.
This fourth EMI project for Smokie stands out. “Smokie Norful Live” is compelling and heartfelt. Fans will enjoy the stirring intensity and deep faith Smokie has become known for on his musical projects. This album is no different. On the smooth, classical piece, ‘Jesus Is Love,’ singing sensation, Heather Headley joins Smokie. The duet between both recording artists is considered a solid cornerstone of the project. The song is inspirational, and declares that God is great and mighty. Heather’s vocals soar with Smokie’s, creating a sensational listen while encouraging a deep walk with God.
“Smokie Norful Live” is all about worshipping God. His musical ministry shines through on each song and leaves listeners wanting to hear more. Collaborating with Tye Tribbett on the track, ‘He’s Gonna Come Through,’ at the beginning of the album, sets the stage for a deep and gratifying live concert experience. The praise party feel with energy emanating from both Tye and Smokie is undeniable on this track, and will get listeners on their feet in seconds. The song encourages listeners in their faith and affirms: “Hold your head up/Dry those tears from your eyes/Don’t you worry/God will serve something for you!/He is sovereign/ Has your life in His hands/Know He loves you/ And for you, there’s a plan…”
