BET SALUTES JAMES BROWN AND EARVIN “MAGIC” JOHNSON AS TOP HONOREES AT 3rd ANNUAL BET AWARDS

Missy Elliott, 50 Cent, B2K Lead Nominations as BET Returns to Kodak Theatre for Star-Studded Live Telecast Featuring Hollywood Elite and Today’s Brightest Stars

Lifetime Achievement Recipient James Brown and Humanitarian Honoree Earvin “Magic” Johnson Lead Parade of Honorees Hosted by The Parkers’ Mo’Nique

HOLLYWOOD (May 14, 2003) – On Tuesday, June 24, BET rolls out the red carpet once again at Hollywood’s prestigious Kodak Theatre to honor two international icons – rock & roll living legend James Brown, the undisputed “Godfather of Soul,” and NBA Hall-of-Famer, philanthropist and business mogul Earvin “Magic” Johnson as the top honorees at the star-studded 3rd ANNUAL BET AWARDS show. The countdown has begun for another full-scale “Black Star Power” invasion of Hollywood when BET will recognize the best-of-the-best in music, sports and acting. Brown, the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and Johnson, the Humanitarian Awardee, will lead an all-star parade of performers, presenters and nominees when the lights go up at the Kodak Theatre.

Hip-hop diva Missy Elliott, rap’s leading newcomer 50 Cent and R&B super group B2K top the 2003 list of BET Award nominees, with Missy pulling a triple play with nominations for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Video of the Year for “Work It” and Best Collaboration with Ludacris and Ms. Jade for “Gossip Folks.” 50 Cent and B2K netted two nominations each, and are also considered favorites to be included in the interactive Viewers’ Choice category chosen on-line via the BET.com web site during the telecast. One of the Original Queens of Comedy also takes center stage as Mo’Nique, star of the UPN Network’s The Parkers, hosts her first-ever BET AWARDS telecast.

BET kicks off its spectacular showcase with a special 106 & PARK: Live from the Red Carpet pre-show presentation hosted by AJ and Free from 7 – 9 p.m. ET/PT*, capturing the sizzling fashions and arrival excitement of Hollywood’s glamour set. The scene then shifts inside to the Kodak Theatre for the highly-anticipated two-hour “live” awards telecast at 9 p.m. ET/PT* when BET salutes 16 categories across the music, sports and entertainment spectrum. A BET NIGHTLY NEWS Special: Live from the 2003 BET Awards wraps up the night with a post-show look at the festivities from 11:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. ET/PT*. As an early appetizer, viewers can also get a sneak peak at the 2003 BET AWARDS and the featured honorees starting Monday, June 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT with the BET Awards Special with Jacque Reid.
