Morris Robinson Celebrates First Release
"Going Home" Showcases Former All-American Football Star’s Superb Operatic Bass Via Return to His Spiritual Roots
Promotional Tour in Support of "Going Home" Begins January 16 and Covers Key Cities throughout the U.S.A.
Los Angeles - Renowned operatic bass Morris D. Robinson will celebrate the release of his first solo album on February 20, 2007. Titled "Going Home" on Universal Music Classics, the CD project showcases Robinson’s critically lauded bass that has made him an in-demand performer throughout the world. In addition, Robinson is the first African American male opera singer to sign with a major classical music label in over 50 years.
"Going Home" is a project that is close to Morris D. Robinson’s heart, as the 14-song effort reveals. "As a black male professional opera singer, I know first hand that faces like mine are quite rare in that arena. With the introduction of my debut CD, I feel it important to spread the word in order to make known my existence to our community while simultaneously reaching out to a younger audience to show others the possibilities of success in other musical areas."
To that end, "Going Home" mines the rich veins of Robinson’s African-American musical heritage into an engaging cornucopia that includes spirituals, hymns, gospel and opera. "It allows me to straddle the best of those worlds in order to express my love for opera and gospel in one setting," Robinson comments. Among the most notable songs are "Walk With Me" and "Go Down Moses," both of which combine successfully Robinson’s gospel background with the love for opera that he developed as an adult. In describing "Go Down Moses," Robinson says, "This Spiritual blends the two worlds I straddle the best and allows me to express my love for opera and gospel in one song." Perhaps the most poignant song on the album, however, is "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," which Robinson performed at his mother’s funeral.
In support of "Going Home," Robinson will embark on an ambitious multi-city tour in January. His commitment to opera remains strong with a January through May 2007 run of shows at the legendary New York Metropolitan Opera, where he will play Sarastro in the popular Mozart opera "Die Zauberflote" (The Magic Flute).
