RJ Helton Announced That He Is Gay
By Othor Cain
Everyday we can expect certain things to happen; like the sun rising, eating food, God’s blessings and another high profile celebrity to ‘come out.’
Such is the case this week when former American Idol contestant RJ Helton, 25, announced that he is gay while on SIRIUS Satellite Radio host Larry Flick’s show “OutQ in the Morning" on Wednesday.
Helton made headlines around the country by making it to the top 5 of the first installment of the widely popular FOX TV show American Idol. He later recorded television commercials for Old Navy Clothing Store. He went on to record a successful gospel music album in 2004 on GospoCentric Records and here is where the conflict begins.
When asked by the show’s host why he was no longer performing inspirational music, Helton replied, “I can have a faith but can’t be who I want to be. So a lot of it was just personal things I needed to overcome and just be proud of who I was. Just because I am gay does not mean I can’t love God.”
Helton is not the only person feeling this sting by the church; homosexuals across the country find themselves out-of-touch with the mainstream church or out of step with God according to traditional teachings when, and if, they publicly announce their sexuality. However, if left unsaid they have a place to serve in the church.
Just notice the choir or music ministry in every church in this country or in other areas of ministry - there you will find a homosexual.
Helton’s announcement comes on the heels of Mississippi native and pop icon Lance Bass’ announcement that he, too, is gay and maintaining a relationship with a former Amazing Race winner. Ironically it also came on the same day that Grey’s Anatomy star T.R. Knight, 33, told PEOPLE Magazine that he, too, was gay.
Helton, however, is not allowing his announcement about his lifestyle deter him. He is moving forward with his life and living extremely comfortable with his new lease on life.
“Today, this morning, three seconds ago, I’ve never even said that. It feels good,” said Helton. “I’m just really comfortable with who I am now. I’m very proud of who I am.”
