Where Are The Gentlemen?

A gentleman does more than simply open doors for ladies and reach first for the bill on a date. He masters the social graces, those often unwritten and unspoken behaviors that reflect an uncommon refinement. They are what set him apart from the ordinary fellow. And they are characterized not just by what a gentleman does, but what he does not do. We offer 10 for your edification.

A gentleman NEVER:

•  Flips his necktie over a shoulder or tucks it in his shirt when eating. Nor does he tuck his napkin into his shirt collar. He understands that eating with decorum greatly minimizes the chances of a spill and he doesn't fear a dry-cleaning bill.

•  Abuses waiters, valets or other service personnel. He exercises restraint, expressing concerns with tact and diplomacy.

•  Networks at a funeral. He does not give or accept a business card or even entertain a career-advancing discussion. He respects the deceased and the mourners.

•  Displays jagged, discolored, or overly long fingernails with dry cuticles. Nor does he display the effete gleam of clear post-manicure polish. He maintains clipped and clean nails with a naturally healthy shine.

•  Pressures a woman for sex. He respects her dignity and worth as a creation of God and appreciates her desire to be a virtuous woman.

•  Ridicules or humiliates children. He mentors them, enhances their self-esteem and encourages them to reach their potential.

•  Takes credit for someone else's idea. He understands that doing so is the height of dishonesty and evidences a lack of integrity.

•  Blares his home or auto stereo. He is a good neighbor who respects the right of others to not be forcibly entertained by his musical preferences.

•  Accepts an invitation and then cancels it when something “better” comes along. He honors his commitment, even if it means politely declining the second invitation.

•  Flaunts his wealth or any of his material assets. He understands that he is merely a steward of what belongs to God.
