GC Valentine's Message: New Opportunities for Valentine’s Day
Written By Em Fergusson
In the book of Corinthians, the apostle Paul said the greatest of all emotions is love. The entire act of Jesus Christ dying on the cross for our sins was an act of love. So, when February 14 rolls around, it should be an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the love of Christ and the many “loves” he has placed in our lives. Valentine’s day is not just about spouses going out to eat and celebrating by enjoying a hard-to-come-by time alone. It’s a time to reach out and make decisions about the relationships in your life by either embracing some of them or discarding some of them.
Some GC readers may be in abusive relationships with a loved one. It could be a spouse, boyfriend, or parent. Know that your life can change this Valentine’s Day, by incorporating the greatest love of all into your life: Jesus Christ. Once you invite Him in and dedicate yourself to living a moral, Christian life, then your actions, words, and deeds will only be about love. What you profess, the Bible says, will come to pass. The deep faith you will develop from a close relationship with God, will drive you to embrace those about you who you love and in turn, they will have love to share with you.
So, change is coming this Valentine’s day. Saturday is a great time of the week to get together with loved ones and do something special. Go beyond the call of duty by doing something different. Instead of flowers, take your special someone on a long walk where you two can connect on a deeper level. In a world of increasing technology where social skills are slowly diminishing, we all need to seize opportunities to talk, connect, laugh, and participate in activities that bring the family together without being in front of video games, television, or computers. In the end, you’ll be thankful for the emotional and spiritual growth that is often born out of sharing with God and others.
The bible encourages us to fellowship. Husbands, wives, children, grandparents, extended families, neighbors, friends, and community members ought to seize the opportunity to tell each other what love means and show appreciation to each other. It can be as simple as planning dinner this coming Sunday, allowing everyone to express the many blessings in their lives, by sharing poems, songs, and odes about love.
